What is LASIK?

LASIK, which stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a type of refractive surgery that corrects vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to reshape the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, to improve the way light is focused onto the retina at the back of the eye.

At Monson Vision, we use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to ensure that our LASIK patients achieve the best possible results. Our team is committed to staying up-to-date with the latest advances in LASIK surgery to ensure our patients receive the highest level of care.

How LASIK Works

LASIK works by reshaping the cornea, which is the clear front part of the eye, to improve the way light is focused onto the retina at the back of the eye. During the procedure, a femtosecond laser is used to create a thin flap in the cornea. The flap is then lifted, and another (excimer) laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct the patient's vision. The flap is then replaced, and the cornea begins to heal. Visual improvement is usually noticed right away with best visual results expected within a few hours to a day.

The LASIK Procedure

Before the procedure, your eyes will be numbed with eye drops to ensure that you don't feel any pain or discomfort. You'll also be given medication to help you relax. Once you're comfortable, Dr. Bryan Monson will create a thin flap in the cornea using our femtosecond laser. This takes only a few seconds per eye and you should be comfortable throughout the process. This flap is then gently lifted to expose the underlying cornea.

Dr. Monson will then use will then use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. The laser removes microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea, altering its curvature and allowing light to be focused more precisely on the retina. The laser is programmed based on your unique prescription, so the procedure is completely customized to your individual needs. When it comes to caring for your eyes, there should be no compromise. At Monson Vision, we use only the most proven, advanced laser vision platforms in the industry such as Allegretto Wavelight and VisuMAX technologies that boast industry gold standard accuracy and safety. You can rest easy knowing all of our laser vision correction procedures are entirely blade-free and performed on the most current, most advanced laser platforms on the planet. The entire LASIK procedure typically takes only a few minutes per eye, and most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure. After the procedure, you'll need to rest for a short period of time before returning home.

Post-LASIK Care: Ensuring Optimal Healing and Results

Most patients experience improved vision immediately after LASIK, but it's important to follow your surgeon's instructions for post-operative care to ensure that your eyes heal properly. You'll need to use eye drops (provided as part of your surgery at Monson Vision) for several weeks to prevent infection and promote healing, and you'll need to avoid rubbing your eyes or engaging in strenuous activities for a period of time after the procedure.

Most patients are able to return to work and other normal activities the next day or within a few days of the procedure, but it's important to avoid activities that could damage your eyes or cause complications. Your surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions for recovery and post-operative care to ensure that you achieve the best possible results.

EVERY DETAIL MATTERS

Few Centers in the United States take such an in-depth, detailed approach to ocular imaging and assessment you’ll experience on the day of your evaluation.

None of these studies are painful. In fact, they are like cameras, each designed to inform your surgeon and eye care team about every aspect of your eyes, from the rods and cones in the retina, to the optical properties of the cornea.

AN EXPERIENCE FOCUSED ON YOU
You will also undergo a detailed consultation with your surgeon, describing all of the potential risks and benefits for your particular situation, and to determine which procedure is optimal for you.
AS UNIQUE AS YOUR FINGERPRINT

Like a fingerprint, each cornea is unique. Because no two eyes are the same, LASIK may not be the procedure of choice for everyone.

At Monson Vision, we take a highly customized, tailored approach to the unique vision needs of each individual.

Monson Vision is one of the few centers in the country that offer not only SmILE, but the full-spectrum of safe, effective modern alternatives to LASIK including

Advanced Surface Ablation
Visian ICLs
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
SmILE
KAMRA Near Vision Inlays

These procedures allow us to take a safe, custom tailored approach to the features of each individual’s anatomy and vision needs. Safety, anatomic variations, unique vision needs, consideration of development of future technologies all play a role.

Individualized planning, and high customization is one of the hallmarks of the approach Monson Vision, and one of the secrets to our outcomes.

LASIK Technology
Few centers have technology this advanced.

The Allegretto family of lasers are the fastest and most precise laser systems for vision correction available in the U.S. Wavelight lasers represent a new generation of refractive technology far more recently designed than other laser platforms. They use technology referred to as High Performance Vision Correction, intended to achieve exceptional visual results under all lighting situations, day and night. The laser employs Perfect Pulse Technology® to safely and accurately control every single laser pulse from start to finish. The flexible performance of Allegretto Wavefront Optimized® LASIK technology enables the correction of each individual’s unique refractive errors while preserving the cornea’s natural shape, effectively reducing side effects such as poor night vision, glare, and halos.

That’s the precision of correction to gently shape the surface of the cornea with light.
Each laser vision correction procedure is customized for the refraction and corneal curvature of each patient. The focused light isn’t seen or felt, and imparts no burning sensation.

Monson Vision uses the fastest FDA-approved LASIK platform available in the country.
Each “burst” of the Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q 400Hz Laser lasts mere billionths of a second before the laser shifts to its next position-up to 100 times faster than some lasers. A correction of one diopter requires just two seconds of treatment. This means shorter procedure times with increased accuracy.

After the WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser procedure, patients are able to experience corrected vision. The laser offers highly customized cornea reshaping for the best possible results from almost any type of laser vision correction.
Clinical data presented to the FDA showed that quality of night vision after treatment was better than night vision quality before treatment with the best glasses or contact lenses. This is a first in history.

Eyes make constant involuntary movements, even in LASIK surgery. The WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser system includes a closed loop eye tracker that tracks the eye’s location during surgery to make sure that the eye has not moved before delivering the next pulse of laser energy. Eye movements are tracked with each laser pulse.

Perfect Pulse Technology controls every single pulse transmitted by the laser to ensure the accuracy, safety and speed of the procedure. With this monitoring, only every fifth pulse overlaps the previous one, reducing the risks of overheating the cornea. This also adds to the speed, precision and safety offered by the WaveLight® Allegretto Wave® Eye-Q Laser system.

  • More precise than any other femtosecond laser with positional accuracy ~3 microns rather than >6 with older femtosecond systems
  • Delivers better results at lower total energy outputs because the laser energy (fluence) is lower and more focused
  • Smart Bed treatment of the VisuMax is extremely sophisticated, helping maintain the perfect, gentle contact pressure optimal for flap creation
  • Curved contact surface employs a curved contact surface when rendering treatment to closely match the curvature of the natural cornea
  • Much lower pressure than with all other femto systems and microkeratomes and is usually accompanied by temporary loss of vision (a few seconds) — creating a better, more comfortable patient experience
  • For the engineers reading this description, the VisuMax delivery system is opto-electronic; all other femto systems use opto-mechanical design. This significant design difference allows greater positional accuracy and puts VisuMax in a class by itself. No other femto laser is capable of the spatial accuracy necessary for ReLeX SMILE.
